Cathy Smale

Cathy SmaleWith a distinctive style that is both popular and unique, Cathy paints work that is easily recognisable and has featured in galleries and exhibitions across Hertfordshire.

Taking inspiration from all around, the paintings describe experiences, places and events. The subjects and locations are diverse, including memories of travels near and far, using details from sketches and photos.

The images are built up in layers of oil colour with brushes and a palette knife which adds a textural quality, yet retains the lines of the initial drawing. As a professional artist, Cathy now paints full-time from her Digswell Arts studio in Letchworth Garden City.

Being an active member of the Herts Visual Arts Open Studio programme, and coordinator of the Art Park for Rhythms of the World Festival in Hitchin, there is a strong engagement with other artists and the wider community, which brings energy and enthusiasm to her working life.
